Hampden
Welcome to Baltimore Hon! This trendy, yet quirky neighborhood centered on W 36th Street, known as “The Avenue,” a colorful stretch of shops, restaurants, and bars in converted row houses. Small galleries and indie stores selling vintage clothes and funky art, while retro diners and dive bars sit along trendy craft cocktail spots. What was once a working-class mill town in north Baltimore, evolved into a lively, eclectic neighborhood that radiates city pride.
Attractions
Baltimoreans from near and far flock to the annual HonFest in the spring, Hampdenfest (a showcase of local art, music, food and flare!) in the fall, and the Miracle on 34th Street during the winter, where neighbors go all out to celebrate the holiday season with huge Christmas light displays. While The Avenue are the main destination, you’ll find some of the city’s best restaurants, bars, and shopping. For good beer and company check out Union Craft Brewery or Nepenthe for local craft brews and a variety of events.
Culture
If you have ever seen the musical Hairspray, then you already have a pretty good idea of what Hampden is all about: fun, eccentric, and embracing its charming history. John Waters, the filmmaker responsible for the musical, calls Baltimore home and has been known to visit Hampden favorites like Atomic Books and Rocket to Venus. During Honfest, Hampden celebrates the beehive hairdo, Baltimore accent, and the kitsch of America in the 1960s during this much-anticipated celebration.
